North Side Operations Engineer / Canon Ranch Well

Canon Ranch Unit #1709/Vulcan Labs FEROX 35 VL 4000

The data provided is from the Canon Ranch Unit #1709 in Borden County TX, a Spraberry producer with a deviated wellbore and a long history of failures.

The total vertical section is roughly 260' with a KOP @ +- 5300' and an average of an 8 degree angle of inclination down to 7520'. From 2011 to 2019 the well suffered from chronic failures. To put it bluntly, this well was a real pain in the ass for many many years. With an average of just under 3 failures per year, our annual pulling cost totaled $65,000. The well suffered primarily from rod and tubing failures as a result of the the deviated wellbore.

During this time we made numerous attempts to mitigate the problem. We tried everything from downsizing the pump, adding rod guides, increasing tubing size to 2 7/8", changing out multiple rod designs, slowing the unit down, chemical squeezes, etc. All this with little-to-no change in our failure rate.

In March of 2019, Relentless Permian Operating approached Vulcan Labs with hopes to find a potential solution. After some collaboration, our production team came up a design that best suited our needs. It was decided that we would have Vulcan internally coat the bottom 3500' of 2 7/8" L-80 tubing with their FEROX 35 coating. Additionally, we determined that we would run 1000' of 1" rods as weight rods w/ 2 molded guides per rod and Vulcan's VL 400 external coating on each 1" rod coupling. This would ensure optimal friction reduction through the dogleg.

To date, I am happy to say we have had 0 failures since this installation. As a matter of fact, we have witnessed the longest run time since the well was drilled in 2008. As of October of 2022, the well has run just over 3 1/2 years (43 months) without a failure.
